Gabby Douglas captured the most prestigious title in women’s gymnastics. The 16-year-old made history by becoming the first black American to win the individual all-around Olympic gold medal. She’s also the first American to win an individual and team gold in the same Olympics.
During the competition, which features the 24 most elite gymnasts in the world, Douglas was flawless. She scored 15.500 or higher in her first three rotations and scored 15.966 on the vault.
After earning a 15.033 in the floor exercise, Douglas faced stiff competition for the gold by Russian gymnast Victoria Komova. But in the end, Komova’s floor score was not enough to knock off Douglas who was perfect during most of the competition.
Douglass now has two gold medals after winning a team medal on Tuesday. She is just the fourth American, along with Mary Lou Retton, Carly Patterson an Nastia Liukin, to capture the all-around title.
