Beverly Brewster Changing Lives One Generation at a Time

‘Touch One, Touch a Generation’ is not simply the name of an upcoming workshop, it’s the mantra of The National Leadership Group, Inc., deeply rooted in the mission of the organization. This ‘action’ statement requires a person to actively touch the lives of another in order to bring about real change. Under the leadership of CEO and President Beverly Brewster, NLG is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those living in the inner city by helping them to build positive self-images.

In 2007, Brewster was inspired to produce a documentary about people living in the “projects” and inner cities. This endeavor would open her eyes to a community of people who were “stuck” and unaware of how to change their situation even though most of them desperately wanted to improve their circumstances. She met third an fourth generation “project” residents and most of them were single parents. The film, The Projects: Touch One, Touch a Generation premiered in Atlanta in 2008 and would later become the foundation for The National Leadership Group.

What Beverly uncovered during the making of the documentary motivated her to develop a series of enrichment workshops for single parents. Touch One, Touch a Generation, came about as a “result of my desire to reach out and help others in the community,” says Brewster. The primary focus of the workshops are to show parents that they can achieve great things and give  them the tools to do so.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, The National Leadership Group will hold the workshops and seminars at the Riverdale Centre for the Arts, Business and Leisure Services from 10 a.m. — 5 p.m.  Although the workshops are primarily for single parents includng those who are; divorced, widowed, grandparents raising grandchildren, and parents with absentee spouses serving in the military or incarcerated, NLG encourages anyone in need of assistance to attend this event. Pre-registration is free and on-site registration is $10.

The workshops inform, educate, and train parents to be “successful singles raising successful children” says Brewster, a single mother of three. In addition to learning parenting skills, participants will learn about credit counseling, money management, health and wellness, time management. Dr. Evelyn Wynn-Dixon, the Mayor of Riverdale, Ga., will offer general mentoring. Other workshop leaders include Joyce Council, Vanessa Elliot, Lenora Daniel, Anthony Storman, Pastor Mae Bell Ragland and Debra Meadows.
