Melanie Fiona Accused of Making “Good Hair” Comment
After being lauded for having a head full of long enviable hair, a Canadian R&B songstress is receiving harsh backlash for statements she made about her coiffure. In the forthcoming issue of Sophisticate’s Black Hair magazine Melanie Fiona is profiled for obvious reasons. An excerpt from the interview has caused a firestorm however in which the singer credits her ethnicity for her hair growth.
“Sophisticate’s Black Hair: What’s the secret to your gorgeous long hair?
“Melanie Fiona: I was born with a full head of hair, and my mom wouldn’t let me cut it until I was 12! I’m mixed – my mom is black and Portuguese and my dad is Indian so I have a good mix for growth.”
The “good mix for growth” comment apparently rubbed more than a few of her fans the wrong way and they have since spoken out on social media.”I’m really offended by Media Takeout’s @melaniefiona story because it is possible for black women to have good hair: for example myself,” wrote a fan on Twitter. “Oh Melanie Fiona…. Smh so because I’m not mixed I can’t grow long hair? #real,” chided another. By contrast however, a few fans have come to her defense. “Be mad about Melanie Fiona’s hair and heritage if you want. She’s still finer than wine and can SANG. Guess who’s having the last laugh? Not you,” remarked one.
Since the backlash Fiona’s taken to Twitter to seemingly speak subliminally on the situation.
