Since the beginning of hip-hop, female emcees have found it difficult
to gain respect in the male-dominated industry. Although exceptional
female artists such as MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Eve and Lauryn Hill have
all experienced more success than many of their male counterparts, the
majority of female rappers have struggled to gain prominence. Fed up
with the lack of female representation in hip-hop, Miami natives Trina,
K-Foxx and Jacki-O have decided to join forces to create an all-female,
hip-hop group.

“[There are] only a few women in hip-hop, so
we’re trying to expand the female presence,” Trina says. “Beginning
with me, K-Foxx and Jacki-O, we’re inviting more women to be a part of
this so that we can take over this game.” Although the media has
portrayed Trina and Jacki-O as rivals in the past, the two put those
rumors to rest at the second annual Ozone Awards in Miami. During the
event, the trio went against convention and dressed as superheroes.

“We’re the new superheroes of this industry,” Jacki-O says. “This is
about powerful and strong women taking over. I think we deserve a lot
of respect because we put in as much work as the guys. But now it’s all
about us trying to do our thing. We have to pave the way for
ourselves.”

In 2008, the trio will release an album and they
also plan to tour. “We realized that there was too much money out there
to make for us to be going at each other,” K-Foxx says. “We have to be
united. Our slogan is: ‘United We Stand.’ We’re going to take the world
by storm. We came up with a concept to stick together because women
rarely do this in hip-hop.” amir shaw
