Photography has always been a passion for Leslie Andrews. One of Atlanta’s most in-demand freelance photographers, Andrews’ eye and gift for bringing the best out of her subjects are her calling cards. She knows how to turn the most awkward subject into a poised professional. “A tough shoot is someone that’s not comfortable in front of the camera,” explains Andrews. “So it’s my job to make them feel at ease.” Andrews understands that connecting with a subject goes a long way. “A lot of photographers will just shoot you but won’t speak to you, so you don’t know how you’re doing.”

Andrews had to learn how to turn talent into a career, and got some helpful advice along the way. “A personal friend of mine, who is also a photographer, gave me pep talks on business and let me know to not ever compromise [my] principles and settle for things [I] don’t believe in,” she says. “There’s a time to wait it out and [let] the clients come [to you.]”

Letting the clients come to her wasn’t always easy, but it paid off for the young talent. “It’s a very, very competitive business and in this day and age, anybody that buys a camera can consider themselves a photographer,” she explains. “You have to make yourself stand out — everybody needs to have a signature style.”

But at the end of the day, for Andrews, it’s about the love. “I love fashion and I love doing creative portraits for people,” she shares. “But what I love the most is the response that I get from my work and I love being able to please people.” – todd williams
