Reading the latest issues of Ebony, Complex and Uptown magazines, I was
awed by how stunningly Alicia Keys graced the covers. The Grammy
award-winning bombshell not only exudes charm, and elegance, but she
has a physique to die for. Her beguiling waistline, and perfectly
placed curves make for one of the best figures in the business.
I love my boobs and butt, but after seeing her, I would give
up my best pair of shoes and favorite handbag to banish my belly. I
decided to research nutrition plans that would minimize lifestyle
changes, while giving me the results I so desperately desire.
I came across the much raved about South Beach and Atkins
Diets. But the one that whetted my appetite most is the Berg Diet. This
plan recommends a nutrition plan and an exercise regimen based on the
four body types.
1) Adrenal types have fat that
sags from the abdomen. Nutrition: They need foods high in potassium,
calcium, and vitamin C- leafy greens, mushrooms, oranges, grapefruit,
apples, etc. and should also consume adequate amount of protein (50-75
grams) to replace the destruction of the body’s protein (muscles).
Exercise: Requires light and slow exercise.2) Ovary types carry excess fat accumulated around the
hips and thighs (“saddlebags”) with a lower stomach bulge-just beneath
the navel. Nutrition: They need to consume lots of cruciferous
vegetables, since they are anti-estrogenic. They should also consume
adequate amounts of protein (50-75 grams) to help trigger fat-burning
hormones. Meats and fats consumed should be hormone free, since
environmental hormones can affect ovaries. Exercise: Combination of
light and intense exercise for maximum benefits.3) Thyroid types show weight gain all over the body
rather than just in one particular place. Nutrition: They need iodine
and should consume lots of non-cruciferous vegetables. In addition, the
metabolic rate is slow and cannot tolerate large amounts of protein.
Going light on fats is also recommended. Exercise: High intensity,
short duration exercise is recommended.4) Liver types have a malfunctioning liver that leaks
fluid into the sac around the abdomen, giving a “potbelly” appearance.
Nutrition: They need foods high in potassium such as cruciferous
vegetables and should also consume easily digestible protein (fish,
eggs). Exercise: High intensity, short duration exercise is
recommended. Dr. Berg might be on to something. Here goes, I’ll do a
little grocery shopping according to my body type, grab my iPod and
head to the gym. Here I come, 36”-24”-36.”
