eric marienthal- just around the corner
Peak Records
Marienthal’s Just Around the Corner release is smooth jazz with simplistic playing, married to some of the most maudlin musical indifference you’ve ever heard. The saxophones occupy a central role and are mixed with a lot of reverb, in an effort to push energy into these lethargic tunes. It’s not until song No. 3, “Flower Child,” that these elements form a memorable, if mellow, tune. And thank God for that, because most of this crap is too passé and boring to bear. -forrest green III
