Regulations Agent, State of Michigan Inadequate insurance coverage and malpractice have been the scourge of some patients who have been victims of the health care industry. From expensive root canals improperly performed to outpatient surgeries that lead to long-term hospital stays, sometimes simple medical procedures go wrong and leave patients sick and in need of protection. It’s comforting to know that there are people like state of Michigan regulations agent Scott Boswell, who make it their business to look out for the common man.

“I do investigations for the Board of Medicine,” Boswell explains. “We investigate malpractice complaints that the public lodges against practitioners, [or] it can be nurses, it can be dentists, psychologists [or] social workers. I [regulate] all of them.”

For two and a half years, Boswell has taken pride in defending the rights of the public against those who seek to take advantage of them. His charge is definitely not without its challenges.

“We sometimes concentrate on insurance fraud and protect the public from practitioners that would prey on [them]. The lawyers are probably the biggest headache, because whenever we get a doctor [on malpractice], they’ll get a lawyer immediately,” he says, adding that people really need to be more aware of the services that are offered to protect them.

“Helping the public and looking out for the little man, that’s what I like about [my] job,” says Boswell. – janaya black
