One of the more interesting members of Britain’s new wave of blue-eyed soul, Amy Winehouse’s sophomore album, Back to Black,
finds her blending her cockney swagger with urban grit — and gloss. The
mix works well — especially on the foot-stomping single “Rehab” and the
introspective title cut, which recalls Phil Spector. Winehouse may have
moved from her earlier, jazzier sensibilities into more neo-soul
territory, but in this case, change is good. Winehouse is up for six
Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist.
