Boxing isn’t the same. It’s not like it was back in the `80s. It has gone through a lot of changes because people saw it as a way to make money. So, some of the fighters aren’t training as hard and people aren’t supporting [it] as much as they used to.
Why do you think fans stopped supporting the sport? There aren’t many rivalries today in boxing. When we were out there, people wanted to see who we would fight next. And rivalries are great for boxing because it gives fans an idea of what they should expect. They want to see two of the best fighters go at each other. If there were more rivalries today, boxing would be much better.
You have a son who’s making a name for himself in boxing. What can boxing fans expect from him?Well, his name is Ronald “The Motor City Cobra” Hearns, and he’s going to do a lot of damage. Right now he has a 16-0 record and he’s training for an upcoming fight. I think he’ll be better than me because of his size. His size will be a problem for other fighters.
What advice would you give to a young boxer who’s thinking of becoming a professional?Boxing isn’t a joke; you don’t play boxing. It’s not like any other sport. You’re not out there to have fun. It’s too serious to play around with. If you’re going to be a professional boxer, you have to make sure that this is something that you really want to do. You have to make sure that you prepare yourself mentally and physically for every fight.
