The annual ceremony popularly known as the Oscars will air Sunday, Feb. 24. This critic will most likely tune in, since last year’s show brought pleasant surprises such as actor Forest Whitaker’s win for his fascinating performance in The Last King of Scotland. Actor George Clooney has reportedly conceded defeat to his competitor Daniel Day-Lewis in the Best Actor in a leading role category. Clooney admits he doesn’t like Day-Lewis, who starred in 2007’s There Will Be Blood, because “he’s so good.” All in all, there’s a remarkably diverse range of competing factors in this ceremony, which represents what was arguably one of the best years ever for movies. –forrest green III
