Nikka Costa’s latest collection, Pebble to a Pearl, finds the 36-year-old dumping some of the contemporary flourishes of her debut assemblage and fully embracing the grit and funk of Memphis’ legendary Stax/Volt label — a label to which Nikka herself is now signed. “Keep Pushin” recalls the funk of Booker T. & the MGs and the Bar-Kays, while “Damn, I Said It First” is one of Costa’s biggest triumphs as a songwriter. –dusty culpepper
