ESPN’s Road Warrior Showcases the College Experience on “College GameDay”

Chris Fowler College: University of Colorado
Major: Broadcast Journalism
Dream Job: After working as a production assistant for KCNC-TV in Denver, Fowler was hired by ESPN in 1986 to host Scholastic Sports America.

Every Saturday in the fall, Chris Fowler and his “College GameDay” crew travel across the nation to host one of the most watched pre-game football shows. Televised live from different college campuses each weekend on ESPN, the Emmy Award winning show captures the excitement, culture, and pride of America’s top educational institutions. Fowler, who serves as the lead host of “College GameDay,” recently discussed the significance of the pre-game show with rolling out.

Discuss the dynamics of “College GameDay”
We [College GameDay] have been on the road for about 15 years. What we do is showcase the game day environment. The students and faculty members don’t come just to see three guys talking football. It’s about expressing to people what the spirit is like on different campuses.

You all visited FAMU this past weekend. Since the creation of the show, it was the first time you all visited an HBCU. How was the experience?
CF: It was a fantastic experience. It was great to walk out and see the students and cheerleaders. A few Florida State University fans came out. I hope this has a far ranging affect of raising the profile. The program has over 100 years of history and tradition.

What’s the best part about working on “GameDay?”
Fowler: What’s so fun about “GameDay” is the variety. We’ve been to Division III campuses, service campuses, mid-American conferences, and power houses. We have been on the road for a while, but the energy remains fresh.

How do you all decide which campus you will report from?
Fowler: It depends on the landscape of the games. The fact that FAMU and FSU play in the same city is neat. We felt like this made a lot of sense. The object of “College GameDay” is to show the diversity and show the dynamics of a rivalry. College football isn’t just about covering the top 10 teams in the BCS. – amir shaw
