President, Clark Atlanta University

During his tenure at Savannah State University, Dr. Carlton Brown helped the university realize a notable increase in student enrollment and retention and a successful overhaul of its academic and housing systems. With his impressive track record on the university level, it’s no surprise that Clark Atlanta University would call upon Dr. Brown’s expertise to help reorganize the historic institution.

Although he formally took office in August 2008, Dr. Brown joined the CAU family as its executive vice president over a year ago. The extra time allowed the former educator a chance to study the school’s infrastructure and how it related to recent financial aid and personnel shakeups. “We’re re-examining and rebuilding every part of our process structure, particularly focusing on student service and financial management areas. We’re redesigning everything,” he explains.

Brown realizes that the process may ruffle a few feathers along the way, but it’s the type of change that this university needs. “We’re moving to new levels of accountability. Everybody has to be accountable for what they’re supposed to do,” he says. “So from that standpoint, there will certainly be more difficulties, but it’ll be a forward moving institution.”

While Dr. Brown admits the road ahead will be difficult, it is a challenge worth taking. “We’ve got to have the right expertise and we’ve got to have the right kind of people,” Brown adds. “We’re serving kings and queens who will be future leaders of the world and I expect them to be treated that way, every day under every circumstance.” –ivory m. jones
