boosting the community’s spirit through art
During the 2008 holiday season, the Detroit Artist Village offers its annual Art for the Holiday Show, which is a one-of-a-kind gift shopping experience.
The gallery transforms from a fine art exhibition to a fun, energetic, gift shop featuring handmade items by local artists and offering a wide range of products and price points. The holiday show includes jewelry, ceramics, photography, accessories, paintings, drawings, sculpture, books, cards and framed prints.
Chazz Miller is behind the flow of creative juices that keep the art and the Artist marketable. “The Motor City Blight Busters are primarily responsible for getting this project going, and through their efforts we are able to continue [to] expand the opportunities for local artists … to create and exhibit their works,” explains Miller.
The Artist Village is awash in poetry, art, song and dance and is fast becoming one of the most popular local attractions for city residents and visitors. “Every Saturday night we kick off an evening filled with positive energy. The place is filled with the best musicians, poets, singers, artists, deejays and fashion designers in the world,” boasts Miller.
Artists and patrons comment that the Artist Village offers more than just another art or poetry outlet. “It is a movement to fight the blight that was killing our spirits individually and as a community,” says John George, executive director of Motor City Blight Busters. –roz edward
