Platinum-selling
artist Akon and his business partner Devyne Stephens recently held a
turkey drive in metro Atlanta at Throbacks Bar & Grill in College
Park. The giveaway provided 500 turkeys and canned goods for families
in need. With so many families facing financial hardships during the
recession, Akon and Stephens have taken pride in giving back during
such detrimental times.
“The recession has affected a lot of people,” Stephens says. “We
understand exactly what they are going through. But to have success in
the midst of the turmoil that the world is going through is a blessing.
That’s why we want to continue to give back.
”
Both
individuals have strong Atlanta roots. Stephens was born and raised in
Atlanta, and Akon’s music career flourished after he became a resident
of the city.
“Coming up, Atlanta was always good to me,” Akon says. “And with Devyne
being from College Park, we wanted to give back to the place that gave
us so much.”
Akon’s mother Kine Thiam taught the singer the importance of giving
back when he was a child. “Our family has always been charitable,” says
Thiam, who serves as president of the Konfidence Foundation, the
four-year-old organization dedicated to providing underprivileged
African youth with access to modern technology, educational materials,
recreational resources and health and wellness services.
“When Akon was growing up,” Thiam continues, “our house always had
people there who needed help. And with his foundation, we have given to
schools and children who need books and supplies in Africa.”
Back in the States, Akon and Stephens are also planning to sponsor
several toy drives and meal giveaways that will coincide with the
Christmas holiday. –amir shaw
