When
the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources
(NAAAHR) held its second annual Human Resources and Scholarship Awards
Dinner recently, Kelly Hill, the senior manager of events marketing for
spirits giant Pernod Ricard, was on hand to ensure that the guests were
able to toast the occasion. Mingling with the guests as they milled
about, Hill relied on her communication skills to ensure that her
clients had the best experience possible. Possessing the ability to
communicate is only part of what makes Hill one of the best in her
field. Here, she shares with ro her five keys to success in the events
marketing field and what helps her unwind.

Relationships: “Make sure that you build relationships with your corporate partner and whoever you try to do business with.”

Have a plan: “Don’t come in and give a basic idea for everybody. Make
sure the plan has the sponsor in mind.” Have a potential sponsor: “Make
sure you have a sponsor in mind when creating a proposal. Make sure you
understand what the proposal needs for the sponsor and what the
proposal means for you. It’s always a win-win situation.”

Document your success and areas for improvement: “At the end of the
day, everyone wants a successful event, but something may go wrong and
you always want to improve on that.”

Communicate, communicate, communicate: “I can’t stress that enough. You have to make sure you communicate with your sponsor.”

An additional aspect to a thriving career that some may neglect is the
realization of when to slow down. Hill admits that reading and
vacationing with family and friends helps keep her energized.-ivory m. jones
