Update: Barack Obama calls for Gov. Blagojevich’s resignation
Chicago – Today President-elect Barack Obama addressed the growing legal frenzy surrounding Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Obama agreed with other elected officials, that the Blagojevich accused of using corruption to receive financial gain through the selling of the former Senator’s seat, should resign from his post.
Obama told the Associated Press that, “Under the current circumstances, it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois,” he said.
Blagojevich and his chief of staff John Harris were arrested yesterday by federal agents, and were charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In a statement released by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald for the Northern District of Illinois, Blagojevich’s actions came from his own scheme to receive financial gain from appointing President-elect Barack Obama’s Senate seat.
Today Blagojevich returned to his office, but received a push from his own Lt. Governor Pat Quinn and Obama to call it quits. Obama urged the Illinois legislature to consider a special election for his open Senate seat.– gavin philip godfrey
