Outside the Box: 5 Hot Companies for Professional Mavericks
For
those of us who can’t see ourselves crunching numbers or filing
litigation for the rest of their career; there are a wealth of careers
in media, entertainment and recreation. Here, some industry notables
share why they love working ‘outside the box’:
Stacey Brown-Philpot and Desmonique Bonet, founder, Black Google Network/Hispanic Google Network: Stacey: “The Black Google Network was started two years out of awareness that there weren’t enough people like me at the company. We created the organization to attract more African Americans to Google. The company is committed to diversity.” |
|
Desmonique: “Having the kind of strength of the Black Google Network behind us, we were able to piggyback off of that and create something similar for the Hispanic community. I thought let’s get us together and find a way to continue to empower each other. We’ve been able to do that and it’s been fantastic!” |

Angel Suarez, Brand Manager, ESPN 360.com: “Everybody here really loves what we do. It’s a fun industry, so it’s not hard to stay ahead of the curve because everyday you come to work and see excellence. It’s the culture of our industry. Being happy and having fun—that is the true meaning of success.” |

Julie Liss, Aquarist, SeaWorld/Aquatica: “[I] take care of anything that’s not a marine mammal or a bird. We have handling protocols for all different types of animals, and we have to make sure we know our information and how to handle these guys. Depending on where you live, there’s probably a zoo or an aquarium nearby, [and] internship programs will definitely help; also, [pursue] a background in dive certification—we’re all divers. I [love] being able to show people the animals that we have, most people wouldn’t get to see the animals and knowing that people come in and won’t get to see them anywhere else is a [exciting] for me.” |

Randi Zuckerburg, Director, Market Development, Facebook: “I’ve met people from all over the world and they all say that Facebook helps them connect with people that they care about and share information. Facebook has grown so fast in the past year–even since I’ve been in the company!” she shares. “Having diversity in the workforce is very important to us. I’d probably get fired if I worked somewhere else because I would be on Facebook all day! Its [full of] really fun, energetic people, [there’s] free food, free dry cleaning—come work at Facebook!” |
