Anchorwoman, WXIA 11Alive
Brenda Wood is one of Atlanta’s most beloved newswomen and an invaluable part of the WXIA 11Alive news team. She also understands the importance of maintaining a love and bond with the city. And she is especially mindful of that during the holiday season.
“That’s part of our mandate as human beings, no matter what color you are. If we take up space on this earth, it really is about sharing and giving back and making sure that others have an opportunity to fulfill their purpose and live life as fully as possible,” she says.
“We’re all on this earth together,” she continues. “And no man is an island.” The native Californian has been in Atlanta for 20 years and working at WXIA since 1997. As one of the city’s most prominent African American female newscasters, Wood is mindful of the impact that she can have on people. She’s also very aware of the roads that have yet to be crossed.
“For African Americans in this country, every advance we’ve had, we’ve had to fight for—and we’ve had to fight together for it,” she feels. “Just because we’ve made some advancements, we can’t afford to forget where we’ve come from and we’ve can’t afford to forget that we haven’t arrived.
Wood has watched forerunners blaze trails for her to follow and she welcomes the opportunity to follow in that proud tradition. “Female anchors in [Atlanta] tend to be higher profile and have a greater impact than perhaps in other markets,” she once told BusinesstoBusiness.com. “That might be attributable to Monica Kaufman, someone who is incredibly charismatic and incredibly involved in this community. As a result, in the ensuing years, all other female anchors are looked to be involved.”–todd williams
