The
International Civil Rights Walk of Fame ceremony in Atlanta, which
takes place on the eve of Black History Month, welcomed a prestigious
2009 class during the annual Trumpet Awards, led by Radio One founder
Cathy Hughes, Los Angeles Lakers basketball legend Earvin “Magic”
Johnson and Rev. Al Sharpton.
The 6th Annual
International Civil Rights Walk of Fame was created by Trumpet Awards
founder Xernona Clayton, to pay homage to civil rights stalwarts,
pioneers, history makers and other men and women who have advanced the
cause for equality in America.
“This will be a lasting
memorial to those whose contributions were testaments to the fact that
human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable,” says Clayton, who
was an assistant to Dr. Martin Luther King in the 1960s.
The recent historic
inauguration of President Barack Obama punctuated the proceedings at
the Walk of Fame ceremonies. The gala took place at Ebenezer Baptist
Church. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Sr. both preached there, and it
sits adjacent to the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolence. The
International Civil Rights Walk of Fame is located on the property of
Ebenezer Baptist Church. – terry shropshire
