Alltel’s
Regina Woziwodzki, much like the country, was swept up in the euphoria
of electing a dynamic young U.S. senator from Illinois, Barack Obama,
to the highest office in the land. It helped to crystallize the
country’s collective yearning for authentic change in an era of great
trepidation and perplexity. It’s certainly befitting this historic
occasion that Alltel’s fifth annual Words of Wisdom Scholarship Program
asked contestants to write an essay describing how they’ve “been called
to build upon this new spirit of change.”

Ten winners from HBCU
schools will be whisked off to Alltel’s headquarters in Little Rock,
Ark., have their scholarships handed to them by the venerated Words of
Wisdom spokesperson, Dr. Maya Angelou, and be treated to a performance
from soul crooner Musiq Soulchild.

“As a part of Alltel’s
initiative to focus and partner with historically black colleges and
universities, we support this event and this cause,” says Woziwodzki,
Alltel’s director of multicultural marketing. “Because it’s our
fifth-year anniversary, we are doubling the amount of money that we are
giving to the students, giving them $10,000 for scholarships for 2009.”

Woziwodzki spoke about
the Words of Wisdom essay contest from the festive HBCU Inaugural Ball
in Washington, D.C., which Alltel also sponsored, on the eve of
unprecedented inauguration. Like most of the multitude that spilled
into the nation’s Capitol, Woziwodzki was still dazed with disbelief
that the nation elected its first African American president. “I am so
proud to be an African American and so proud of our country and what
we’re doing. And I am looking forward to what’s going to happen in the
future. Our prayers are with President Barack Obama and his family.”

Might as well shift the focus of the prayers to the first family. The prayers for change have been answered. –terry shropshire
