Sorting through the myriad of “hipster rappers” emerging in the ATL, it is refreshing to hear a voice and sound that’s rooted in gangsta rap. Like Killer Mike and T.I. before him, PILL attacks both gritty and mainstream tracks with street-laced tales of crime, violence, project life and the beauty of surviving the struggle. Thanks to the fluidity of his flow, on tracks like “Dimes of Hard” and “Addicted,” the MC is more keen, poetic observer of a forgotten community than boastful neighborhood drug dealer. –gavin philip godfrey
