Why did you decide to create the Georgia Amateur Boxing tournament?
The idea came out of necessity to present the sport of boxing better. The boxing community is growing in Atlanta, but a lot people don’t know about it. It helps kids who don’t want to play basketball or football. Boxing is good outlet for kids. I wanted to take it to the next level. I met with Greg Street last year and we came up with the idea.
How important is it for childen to be active in a sport?
If kids are not active, they will come across bad company. They need to always be doing something positive with their mind and body. We make sure that the kids are making good grades and staying out of trouble
How does the discipline instilled through boxing help children in life?
Winning is consistency. If you don’t train, you will not be in shape. You have to build core habits to become successful. If they want to be winners, they have to work hard. Even if a kid isn’t good enough physically to be great at boxing, it still encourages them to be competitive. In boxing, you have to depend on yourself a lot of times. When the bell rings, you have to remember the instructions that your trainer has given you and take care of business by yourself.
