Just ONE Card: How African Americans Can Avoid Credit Card Catastrophe

These days, it’s harder to make transactions without a credit card. They’re very convenient and often make us feel better about spending than pulling out a handful of bills. But, if you’re trying to keep your finances in order and not become a swipe-aholic, it’s best to carry just one credit card.

It may seem like you’re putting too much debt on one card, but it’s the best approach to take for most people. Using more than one card can make it a headache to pay and keep track of credit card bills.


Basically, having one credit card simplifies your finances. Having stores cards doesn’t necessarily have to be a problem, but you have to disciplined and only use them if must. You shouldn’t worry about the credit limit, because most companies increase it anyway. And with one card to focus on, it’s easier to pay off the balance without transferring debt, or worse — creating more. Once you’ve reached the limit, that’s it. It’s much easier to limit your spending and easier to keep your balance under control.

Yes, it’s troublesome to lose a card. But if you only have one, there’s only one company to notify and one account to lock — as opposed to multiple cards and multiple card companies. It’s time-consuming to track down the information for a lost card and notify the parties involved. We all know how easy it is to use a credit card, but limiting yourself to just one card requires that you alter your behavior. Having too many options might open the door to irresponsibility.
