Erika Shevon: The Story Behind the Hit
The lyrics and amazing voice on the hook of rapper Twista’s new single, “Wetter,” are the products of budding songwriter, Erika Shevon and her writing team, Tha Bridge. Born and raised in the Windy City, Shevon spent time in Atlanta where she worked with Dallas Austin and Jarvis before returning to Chicago with the radio heater under her belt. From the comfort of her home studio, Shevon opened up about recording “Wetter,” the best advice she got from NO ID and why she’s more than just a sexy voice on the track. –gavin philip godfrey
So how exactly did a sweet girl like you write and record a raunchy song like ‘Wetter?’
It didn’t really start out that way. Traxster played the track and [my writing partner] and I – we vibed out to it and wrote the hook. [The idea] didn’t really come till we recorded it. We were like, ‘Oh, this is kind of like ‘Get it Wet Pt. 1.’ We knew that it had a classic sound, but we were trying to make something different out of that classic sound.
Do you think folks might not take you seriously because the video from your song will feature half-naked women?
It’s not about being naked, it’s not about [whom] you can sleep with, be with, whose phone number you can get. … You just stay strong in what … you’re trying to do and people will respect it.
You call hip-hip legend NO ID, one of your mentors. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from him?
He always tells me, ‘Your time will come, you just keep doing what you’re doing — be patient [in] everything.’
