While most 15 year olds were out taking driver’s ed, or trying to get phone numbers at the mall, Lil C was making hits for Yung Jeezy (“My Hood”). The talented beatsmith and in-house producer for T.I.’s Grand Hustle has made hits for Kia Shine, Young Dro (“Shoulder Lean”), and he’s working on a project for Mario. With upcoming songs for Killer Mike, Rico Barrino, and Eightball & MJG’s first single “Boo” featuring T.I., the kid shows no signs of slowing down. –jh
So how did you get signed to Grand Hustle?
I was making beats at a studio that was right up under hot 97.7 in Jackson, Mississippi. Jeezy was doing his promo tour for Thug Motivation. He heard some beats upstairs, and he was like ‘Whoa what the hell was that noise?’ He came downstairs [and] I met him. Long story short, he heard a few beats and we took it from there. I did some beats for Trap or Die. I didn’t even know who he was. I was a studio rat. I was in the studio all the time. But when he came in, I was like, “OK.” He was from A-Town [and] it would’ve been my first time working with someone outside of Jackson.
Did you feel pressured, being signed to Grand Hustle at such a young age?
I was ready for it, I used to pray for that to happen with Tip it was like a dream come true. I was like it’s my time, you only get one shot [at] in house producer
Who on the Grand Hustle roster do you have the best chemistry with?
The chemistry is always there with everyone, it’s stupid. So when I get in with Rico Barrino — he’s a magnificent writer. Everybody’s vibe is different and I can stand everybody’s vibe.
What’s your advice for up and coming producers?
Stay consistent, never get full, stay hungry and you’ll always eat.
Mississippi is overlooked a lot, but it has a deep music scene.
Jackson is definitely a music city, there’s a lot of talent in Jakcson. Also, I grew up in the church playing drums. I was 4 years old playing the drums for everybody. So growing up in the church — it blessed my music too.
