How did you get involved with Events & Attractions for NBA Entertainment?
It all began in the 1980s [when] we formed a special events unit, and there were only four people. We oversaw four or five events per year. In 1993, we created NBA Jam Session so that the fans could have access to the players, coaches and celebrities that follow the game.
How does NBA Jam Session help fans become more a part of the NBA game?
Part of NBA Jam Session is the authenticity of the event. It gives people the chance to get in touch with the authentic product. One of the things we always emphasize is that the fans can experience things that the players go through. It’s a valuable attraction [for] ongoing entertainment.
What has been the international response?
We’ve done Jam Session in South America, the Middle East, and Asia. It’s globally recognized. Basketball transcends culture and is now a universal language. There are different opportunities in different countries. Over the course of a weekend, we may see 40,000-60,000 people. We want everyone to be a part of the festival.
What was the most important thing you learned during your stint with the NBA?
The number one thing I learned is that everything begins with the game. Every success begins with people’s respect and love for that game. Whether you talk about the history, or what’s going on now, it all begins and ends with the game of basketball.
What is the overall goal of NBA Jam Van and NBA Nation?
The Jam Van was conceptualized in 1995 and debuted in 1996. The traveling van opens up and becomes an interactive experience. The purpose was for people to experience the NBA in places where fans don’t normally have access to the game or players.
