As the title sponsor for the traveling museum exhibition, America I AM: The African American Imprint, Wal-Mart knows the value of not only preaching diversity, but actively embracing it.

“We understand that our stores serve everyone and our associates come from such a wide range of cultures that we want to make sure that they understand that we appreciate the contributions that they bring, not just as an associate to the store, and not just as our customers, but to the community and to the nation as a whole,” says Glen Wilkins, Wal-Mart’s senior manager of public affairs and government relations for Georgia and Alabama.

The exhibition, presented by Tavis Smiley, features 12 galleries that will take visitors on a journey from struggle to triumph to celebration. Wal-Mart’s employees will have an opportunity to attend the exhibit for free for the first two weeks.

“We know that they’re excited and we want to make sure that they have the opportunity to come and see these artifacts,” Wilkins says.

Wal-Mart is especially focused on making sure the community understands the company’s commitment to celebrating all cultures.

“We think it’s important to let everyone know that we support not just the African American community, but the American community and communities all over the world,” Wilkins says. “It was important for us to be involved in this exhibition to show our commitment to diversity.” –jh
