Wyclef and Nick Cannon have joined the auto-tune bashing club, with the release of their new song, “Mr. Auto-Tune.” Wyclef sings, “If you sing off key, for a small fee I can make you a celebrity …”
He then proceeds to list off celebrity auto-tune singers, including T-Pain, Teddy Riley, Roger Troutman, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and even himself. Nick chimes in, questioning: “Do I need singing lessons?” To which Wyclef playfully responds, “Hell nah, all you need is a computer …”
While Wyclef and Nick Cannon’s version is lighthearted and comical, Jay’s is a bit more serious, attacking not only the use of auto-tunes, but the entire ringtone generation of hip-hop music: “This is anti-auto-tune, death of the ringtone/This ain’t for i-Tunes, this ain’t for sing-along …”
No matter what the take on it, playful or serious, one thing is certain — the industry has spoken, and the auto-tune is officially taking a dirt nap. –rogue marie
