As the nation continues to face alarming unemployment rates, many individuals are re-entering college and changing their careers. One career that has yet to be affected by the recession is nursing. Katrina Walker and Sharon Montgomery, nursing instructors at Atlanta Technical College, offered several reasons why a nursing degree could be the cure for unemployment.-a.r.

Why should individuals pursue a career in Nursing?
Katrina Walker: The demand for nursing is great. I’ve been in the health care field for about 14 years. We have a nursing shortage across the nation. We have not felt the effects of the recession because we are sought after. Nurses can go out on lunch and get a job.

How long does it take to get a nursing certificate?
Sharon Montgomery: You can receive a certificate in a year and a half. You can get a job as an assistant while you continue your education. When you are employed, many health care facilities offer tuition reimbursement.

What high school courses should students take if they want a career in nursing?
Sharon Montgomery: Students should concentrate on health and sciences courses while in high school. There are hospitals that take interns, so students should start as early as possible.

What type of person makes a good nurse?
Katrina Walker: People who are caring and want to take care of other individuals make good nurses. If you want to help people, you will be good for the job.
