Delta Sigma Theta Presents ELTSGallery D’Estee 2009: The Audacity of Art
For almost a quarter century, the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, located in the heart of Chicago’s Bronzeville, has thrived due in large part to its strong leadership and ever burgeoning membership. Chartered with less than 100 members, the chapter now boasts an active membership of over 750 women.
Set to continue one of the national sorority’s missions of sustaining arts and letters projects within the community, recently, the Chicago sisters presented, “Gallery D’Estee 2009: The Audacity of Art.” The lively affair honored the work of Chicago icon Nicole Smith, who’s heralded as a cultural curator and patron of the arts.
“It has always been my desire to help others like me…to make a positive difference in their community. This is what I hope to have accomplished by involving others in the discovery of the arts,” said Pamela Hamb of the venture, which marked the seventh free art exhibit the chapter has featured since starting Gallery D’Estee. Other artists have included Geraldine McCullough, Susan Woodson, Lawrence D’Artignac, and Dr. Margaret Burroughs.
Hamb, who joined the soroity 30 years ago at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said programs like this remind her of why Delta has meant so much to her over the years.
“I chose Delta because it was a public service organization,” she proudly recalls. –tbinns
