From Usher & Tameka to Nas & Kelis: Why Celebs Need a Prenup

From Usher & Tameka to Nas & Kelis: Why Celebs Need a Prenup

Jumping the broom is a tough decision for anyone. But that may go double for celebrities who breathe, eat and sleep under the watchful eye of E!, TMZ and the blogosphere. Then there’s the little issue of how all of the money will be divided up. With some of our favorite celebrity marriages biting the dust, we’ve decided to break down three essential reasons to have a prenuptial agreement on standby. –rogue marie

1. “I ain’t sayin she a gold-digger …” The double standard that’s applied to women after a messy public divorce is tragic. Nine times out of 10, the woman is painted as a money-hungry villain trying to play her ex out of millions in child support (ahem, Kimora Lee Simmons). But, having a prenup can protect the interests of both parties, and keep money from being a major issue from the jump.

2. Attention changes folks. Now this goes for regular folks’ relationships too, but celebrities can really be affected by this. Remember when Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey were no-name, C-List stars? MTV swooped in, made Jess a household name, and well, their love slid down the tubes. And didn’t Nas and Kelis dabble in reality TV for a hot second? See what we mean?

3. The crazy factor. Now, we’re not here to speculate on the mental health of people like Kelis, Eddie Murphy or Usher, but let’s just say some people do a great job of hiding their inner-Norman Bates. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
