Serena Williams takes home the coveted trophy, ironically named the Venus Rosewater Dish, beating her sister Venus Williams 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the 2009 Ladies’ Singles. This is the younger Williams’ third Wimbledon championship title. It’s been six years since the elated Serena won her last Wimbledon in 2003. Venus has won five times and was aiming for her third straight title.

A runner-up, Venus modestly answers questions from an NBC reporter about the match while standing on Centre Court, “Today she was too good. She had an answer for everything and she played the best tennis, so congratulations.”

This win makes Serena the world’s women’s tennis champion. She holds the winning title for three of the last four tennis championships—U.S. Open, Australian Open and now Wimbledon.

Serena, who has been known to take defeat by her sister very hard, carefully thanks her support system, “I am so blessed. I thank God, my Jehovah, for letting me get through this match. It hasn’t settled in that I won yet. I am really excited. Thanks mom, Susan, Sasha, Nike, thanks so much … Jill. Hi dad … thanks for putting up with me.” Her overwhelmed father can’t stand to watch matches between his daughters so he’d taken off to “go cut the lawn.”

The Williams sisters are expected back on Centre Court later Saturday, July 4, for their doubles final against Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs; they’re aiming for their fourth title together at Wimbledon. –yvette caslin
