The passing of several prominent figures in entertainment has marred the summer of 2009. As individuals across the nation are in the midst of grieving over the deaths of Michael Jackson, Ed McMahon, and Farrah Fawcett, the shocking death of former NFL MVP Steve McNair has added to what has become a tragic summer.

According to initial reports by Nashville police, McNair, 36, was found shot to death along with a 20-year-old woman in downtown Nashville. His untimely death stands as a major loss for the NFL and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

McNair became just the second black quarterback to play in the Super Bowl when he led the Tennessee Titans to the big game in 1999. Before being drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1995, McNair broke several NCAA records while playing quarterback for Alcorn State University. McNair is survived by sons, Junior, Steven, Tyler, and Trenton.-amir shaw
