Soul artists Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and crooner Babyface delivered a fantastic show on the southeast leg of their tour. Though Babyface’s segment was short, he impressed fans with his roster of number one hits. Included also in his anthology, were songs he wrote and produced like “Don’t Be Cruel” and “End of the Road,” for artists Bobby Brown and Boyz II Men.

Following Babyface, was Philadelphia soul group Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. Beverly, 62, boasted of the group’s longevity as he took fans down memory lane. He shared, between sets, how the 45-year-old band rose from obscurity in 1976 following the advice of the godfather of crooning, Marvin Gaye. “We were called Raw Soul when we went to the Bay Area in 1972. In late 1976, after being broke for five years we met Marvin Gaye who encouraged us to change our name. So we did.”

The group continued the show performing classics hits like “Joy & Pain” and “Happy Feeling.” Every set brought fans to their feet.

In the middle of dancing, author Joyce Suber shared that she’s a perennial fan. “I raised my son on Maze and have every one of their CDs…”. Raising her glass and leaning back when Beverly started singing “There’s a time of the day/When the sun’s going down…” Suber stopped mid sentence and started swaying to the beat, to what was obviously her favorite single, “Golden Time of Day.”
