As corporate category manager for Kroger, Tracy Smith knows all about delegation, responsibility and making power moves. But what gives her the most joy is her interaction with the community. That’s one of the reasons she was so excited about Kroger’s role in the My Black is Beautiful event in Atlanta.
“[My Black is Beautiful] is extremely important for our company because Kroger is known for having great prices and customer service, but we want our customers to know that diversity is also very important to us,” says Smith. “We want all of our associates throughout the organization to reflect the communities that we are in.” Smith has been with Kroger for 16 years and her daily tasks include handling all baby items and health and beauty products for Kroger’s Atlanta division.
“I’m responsible for making sure that we have those products out in our stores, and that they are advertised in the media,” she explains. “I make sure that our stores have the products that are necessary for our customers.”
Her current responsibilities have caused her to feel a special connection to My Black is Beautiful and its celebration of black women and sisterhood. “I think [My Black is Beautiful] is an outstanding event where we’re able to gather together and celebrate our culture and uniqueness,” she says. “I hope that we can be inspired and make it an uplifting experience for us to grow ourselves [as black women] and have a positive impact in our community.” -jh
