It looks as if Rod Blagojevich’s role of Illinois Governor will soon come to an end.
Early this morning, the Illinois House voted 114-1 in favor of Gov. Blagojevich’s impeachment for his political corruption and abuse of power. The decision marks the first time in the 190-year history of the state that a governor has been impeached.
Blagojevich was arrested Dec. 9 on charges of corruption- including a said plot to receive financial gain by selling President-elect Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat. According to spokesperson for Gov. Blagojevich, the governor has no intentions of resigning and will hold a press conference later today in downtown Chicago.
The House’s vote will now be the catalyst for the Senate trial, which will decide whether or not the throw Gov. Blagojevich out office completely.
Towards the end of last year, Blagojevich held a press conference pleading his innocence of the charges. “Now I know there are some powerful forces arrayed against me; it’s kind of lonely right now,” Blagojevich said. “But I have on my side the most powerful ally there is, and it’s the truth. Besides, I have the personal knowledge that I have not done anything wrong.” -gavin philip godfrey
