The Obamas, America’s next First Family visits 19th Street Baptist Church

altThe next First Family worshipped at one of Washington
DC’s most historic black churches. On the Sunday before his swearing in
as America’s 44th and first black President, Barack Obama, along with
his wife Michelle, daughters Sasha and Malia, and mother-in-law Marian
Robinson attended service at 19th Street Baptist Church.

Congregation
members came out in droves–some up to three hours before the service–to
get a glimpse of the family. Slated to only be in attendance for 20
minutes, the Obamas stayed the entire service.

Since
1839, 19th Street Baptist Church, located in the northwest section of
town, has been a pillar of Washington’s African American community.
Hailed for their HIV/AIDS outreach programs and famous choirs, the
church welcomed the future First Family with open arms.

In
his sermon titled, “For Such a Time as This,” Rev. Derrick Harkins
reflected on the historical and spiritual importance of Obama’s rise to
the presidency. “You are aware that you are here for such a time as
this,” Harkins said, also adding that Obama should always remember two
very important pieces of advice. “First, look to your wife as an
encourager. [Second], God is in the transformation business.”

In
a statement from the press office, the Obamas said that they “were
honored” to be a part of the congregation. At the current time, the
future First Family hasn’t determined where they will regularly attend
church service. –gavin philip godfrey
