Educating African Americans in New Careers
Part II: Cosmetology
The
beauty industry grosses $60 billion annually, so it’s a safe bet that
cosmetology services will continue to be in demand. Bronner Brothers
International Hair Show attracts millions of people from around the
world each year, and Chris Rock recently produced a film on the
sociopolitical impact of hairstyles in the black community. Henry Wise,
an instructor at Atlanta Technical College, discusses several benefits
for choosing a career in cosmetology. –amir shaw
Personal Connection –
“One of the greatest benefits to cosmetology is the personal connection
you have with your clients. This allows you to develop good
relationships and offer comfort to the people you serve.”
Building Confidence –
“Building confidence has a long-term value in this society. In
cosmetology, you are helping people look good and feel better about
themselves. Despite the recession, everyone wants to still look nice
when they leave their home.”
Independence –
“If you want to get into a field where you own your destiny,
cosmetology is the way to go. You can earn a degree in two years and it
opens the door to being more than a stylist. There are several avenues
you can choose from. It’s one of the most lucrative careers you can be
in.”
