Emily King – On Top of the World

Emily King - On Top of the World

With her breakout album, East Side Story, having been nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B, one could say recording artist Emily King is sitting on top of the world. Since her smash single “Walk in My Shoes” hit radio waves the native New Yorker has not looked back.  King is rapidly developing her own fan base after coming off a successful tour with Floetry, John Legend and Lyfe Jennings. The singer was recently in Chicago to perform for an excited audience at the Sisters of Shine tour sponsored by Pantene Pro-V and JET magazine. The collaboration, a stroke of sheer genius between Johnson Publishing Company’s JET magazine and Proctor and Gamble’s Pantene products, swept through 10 cities to introduce Relaxed and Natural, the newest Patene hair care product for African American women. “I thought this would be an uplifting thing for women and I love JET and anything which brings sisters together,” says King. King, who was born Emily Cowings to international jazz duo Marion Cowings and Kim Kalesti, describes her debut album as, “everything I grew up with.” The lyrics and melody definitely keep her in a New York state of mind. The J Records artist said she worked on the project for three years before getting it just right.
Now at the tender age of 21, King is a gifted songwriter and producer whose talent can’t be contained.  Instead of being pigeonholed into a particular category, she embraces a variety of musical genres and makes them her own by adding her unique vocals to a song. –tony binns
