Floyd Mayweather’s decade of dominance is unfair. After a
21-month layoff, he should have shown signs of poor timing and fatigue against
his highly skilled opponent, Juan
Manuel Marquez. But Mayweather obliterated Marquez in a 12-round boxing match that turned into a
clinic by the start of the second round. As the final bell rang, critics and fans had to wonder if there was anyone in the world who could
stop his reign.
This decade, Mayweather has proved to be miles ahead of every boxer who has
stepped into the ring with him. His dominance in the ring is reminiscent of the 1997
Chicago Bulls, the 2007 New England Patriots (regular season), and the 1998 New
York Yankees. He has an an air of invincibility that great teams have
when they embark on historical runs. He doesn’t just believe that he can win, he
knows that the boxing match is over before it begans. His most pressing issue
during the match is probably thinking of place to party once the fight is over.
But, there are a few fighters who hope to put an end to his impressive run.
The winner of the Miguel Cotto vs.Manny Pacquiao boxing match could face Mayweather in 2010. In attempt to
rile Mayweather, Shane Mosley jumped into the ring during post-fight
interviews to challenge him to a future boxing match.
But any boxer who fights Mayweather should know that his most dangerous
opponent could be himself. If he can keep his mouth from tying up his hands, he
will be remembered as a top 10 fighter of all-time. –a.r.
