Derrion Albert and Other Black Teens Continue to Die as Chicago Bids for the 2016 Olympics

alt

President Barack Obama and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley will travel to Denmark on Friday to support Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics. But instead of traveling out of the country to lobby for Chicago to host the Olympics, they both should take a trip to K-Town, the “Wild Hunneds,” and Altgeld Gardens to find out why so many black teenagers are killing each other.

During their journey through the most volatile neighborhoods and public schools in Chicago, they need to figure out the problem and begin to work on solutions. President Obama should sit down with members of the Black Gangster Disciples, Four Corner Hustlers, and The Folks Nations to understand why black teens have developed such venomous hatred for each other. Our elected officials need to determine why 37 students were killed during the 2008-09 school year and why three students have already been killed since the start of the 2009-10 school year. While most teenagers are concerned about passing exams, graduating and preparing for college, the teenagers in Chicago are worried about being killed before receiving a diploma.

The murder of Derrion Albert has caused a national uproar primarily because it was captured on video. But who will take the initiative to prevent the next teenager from being struck down by murderous villains? As President Obama and Mayor Daley attempt to sell Chicago to the world, the two leaders must come to the realization that the city has a problem that can’t be solved by an international athletic competition.
