Reggae artist Buju Banton may have been in the business of selling more than records. According to an affidavit from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Banton was recently arrested in Miami after attempting to buy 5 kilos of cocaine from an undercover police officer.
Apparently, an undercover officer showed Banton and an associate 20 kilos of cocaine and a price was eventually negotiated. Although Banton was not at the scene of the crime when the actual deal was made one day later, he was arrested and charged with conspiracy to possess and intent to distribute cocaine. Although Banton denies the charges, he could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The arrest comes on the heels of Banton’s Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album for Rasta Got Soul. –a.r.
