The O.J. Simpson verdict and the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 are two events that created a media frenzy and riveted the nation’s attention. This morning, Tiger Woods’ apology may have had the same effect. Every major broadcast network interrupted their regular programming to carry Woods’ press conference.
During the press conference, Woods finally broke his silence and admitted to extramarital affairs by saying, “I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated.” Surrounded by close friends and family members, Woods showed contrition and apologized to his family, business partners and the kids who looked up to him. He also jumped to the defense of his wife, Elin, who was noticeably absent.
“I have a lot to atone for, but there is one issue I really want to discuss,” Woods said. “Some people have speculated that Elin somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. It angers me that people would fabricate a story like that. Elin never hit me that night or any other night.”
Woods also admitted that he has received counseling and will return to therapy this week. He said that he would return to golf one day, but did not specify a time frame. How necessary was this press conference and will it allow him to repair his damaged image? Weigh in with your thoughts. –amir shaw
