NBA’s Gilbert Arenas Avoids Jail, Must Serve One Month in a Halfway House for Gun Offense

Gilbert Arenas

Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards could have been sentenced to as much as five years in prison for transporting guns from his home in Virginia to the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. However, Superior Court Judge Robert B. Morin showed mercy by only sentencing Arenas to 30 days in a halfway house.

Prosecutors suggested that Arenas be sentenced to three months in prison, but Judge Morin only added two years probation and 400 hours of community service to his sentence.

Arenas will also be required to donate $5,000 to a fund for victims of violent crimes.

Arenas pleaded guilty in January to gun charges after it was discovered that he took unloaded guns to the Wizards’ locker room and told teammate Javaris Crittenton to “Pick one” after the two got into a heated argument over a gambling debt. Arenas and Crittenton are currently suspended from the NBA without pay. –amir shaw
