Miller received training in classical, pop and jazz — the genre that best showcases his musical background. His skill and versatility earned Miller the coveted chair of principal trumpet with the African American Philharmonic Orchestra of Atlanta. His charismatic style and captivating sound splashed Miller onto the Atlanta jazz scene and kept him at the forefront over the years.
The accomplished trumpet player is using his influence as an entertainer and an artist to bring awareness to the plight of breast cancer patients and the ravages of the disease, which is one of the leading causes of death among African American women according to the Circle of Promise breast cancer organization.
Miller lost his mother to cancer in 2009 and has firsthand experience with how destructive this disease can be. He also understands how imperative it is for funds to be raised to help aid with a cure. “Everything that I do is purely to make sure that help and support [are] available for trying to find a cure for cancer,” he says contemplatively.
The historic Sambuca nightclub — which is known for its creative and inviting musical atmosphere — is the venue for Miller’s benefit concert on Thursday, April 1. The proceeds from the performance will go towards assisting with cancer research. “If there is anything that I can do to support this cause I will, and that is the reason we’re doing this. And if I can use my instrument to do that I will do,” he says. –christian johnson
