Continuing a 13-match winning streak, Venus Williams continues to serve her way toward a possible win at the Sony Ericsson tournament in Miami. It would be her third tournament win in a row and her first Miami win since 2001, and with little sister Serena sidelined, it makes the task a little easier.
Venus just beat Daniela Hantuchova, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 Monday to reach the quarterfinals of the high-profile tournament, struggling for much of the match but finding a way to pull it out in the end:
“I was a little bit off and struggling to find the court,” the No. 3 seed said. “Of course I’d like to win more straightforward, but when it counts and times get tough, I always feel confident that I’m going to find a way to win.”
She is the lone American woman to reach the final 16 and is approaching her sister’s and Steffi Graff’s records of most games ever won in the tournament. Go V! –gerald radford
