Basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson doesn’t hand out assists anymore, but he is handing out assistance — as in helping urbanites find jobs.
The Hall of Famer, former Los Angeles Laker and celebrated businessman’s Magic Workforce Solutions is helping to get urban Americans who are unemployed or underemployed back to work all across the country. And he is enlisting the aid of the upper echelon of Fortune 500 companies to do so — as in Fortune 50 corporations.
“Magic Workforce Solutions is a division of Magic Johnson Enterprises, a human resources solutions provider to Fortune 50 companies nationwide,” Greye Kennedy, national director of recruitment for Magic Workforce Services, told Black America Web. “We’re growing very, very fast. We have presence in all 50 states, and we provide services in temp-to-hire help, temporary and direct hire or permanent opportunities.”
Magic Workforce isn’t the only thing that’s growing. So, too, is the list of corporations seeking MJ’s help in filling vacancies.
For example, MWS is hosting a job fair in Dallas on April 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., looking to help a national logistics company and cell phone distribution center fill 600 warehouse job slots.
It’s not only entry level jobs that Magic’s 2 ½-year-old company specializes in. A large financial services company in the greater Dallas-Ft. Worth region needs to fill white-collar jobs such as loan processors, financial analysts and compliance analysts. “Nationwide, we do the entire spectrum — we fill entry level positions, we fill call center positions, executive level positions. We do those quite a lot,” says Kennedy.
Johnson, who was personally invited back to the White House by President Obama to talk about these very issues (the L.A. Lakers were there to celebrate their latest NBA title), is acting on Obama’s vision of solving black issues by growing the economy and putting people back to work. “We are helping [Johnson] live the dream of putting urban America back to work and employing the underemployed. We happen to be the number one brand in urban America. Yes, he is involved. And we are 100 percent committed,” says Kennedy. –terry shropshire
