LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers recently re-signed a multi-year contract with shoe conglomerate Nike. In 2003, James signed a seven-year, $93 million contract with Nike a few months after graduating from high school.
Although Nike has poured millions into James with the hopes that his signature shoes would become an instant sensation, the sales have been steady, but not spectacular.
James’ signature shoes remain light-years behind Michael Jordan’s Jordan Brand. Jordan retired from the NBA seven years ago, but his company continues to bring in $1 billion in sales for Nike.
However, James, who will be a free-agent this summer, will consider leaving Cleveland to sign with the New York Knicks. His presence in the media capital of the world would undoubtedly increase his sneaker sales. –amir shaw
